There was some­one I used to work with who, well aware of their ten­dency to look at the neg­a­tive side of things, used to con­stantly tell them­selves to “think more positively”.

This was said with such a feel­ing of des­per­a­tion that I just knew that not only would they NOT think pos­i­tively, they would prob­a­bly go even fur­ther into neg­a­tive think­ing. The mere fact that they kept push­ing them­selves to “think pos­i­tively” was a sign that this would ulti­mately be counterproductive. 

It goes on to bemoan the increase in incomes of the top one-tenth of one per­cent of tax pay­ers: “The share of the nation’s income earned by those in this upper­most cat­e­gory has more than dou­bled since 1980, to 7.4 per­cent in 2002. The share of income earned by the rest of the top 10 per­cent rose far less, and the share earned by the bot­tom 90 per­cent fell.” In lecture-like fash­ion, it then instructs its read­ers to “Next, exam­ine the net worth of Amer­i­can house­holds,” a state­ment which intro­duces more fuel for envy.

The most impor­tant qual­ity you can ever develop is hav­ing belief in your­self. The belief that you can, with­out a shadow of a doubt achieve suc­cess in every area of your life. Vir­tu­ally every per­son has the capac­ity to do won­der­ful things with his or her life. But the great­est sin­gle obsta­cle for most peo­ple is self-doubt. Brand names, cor­po­rate logos and other iden­ti­fy­ing sym­bols get their pro­tec­tion from trade­mark law, while con­fi­den­tial busi­ness data is under the pro­tec­tion of trade secret law.
